Pacific UV - Longplay 2 [2008]

pacific uv

Hailing from Athens, Georgia, by way of Augusta, the space rock outfit Pacific UV formed in 1998 under the auspices of Clay Jordan and Howard Hudson. Almost immediately after the duo began mixing song ideas together, drummer and keyboardist Lucas Jensen dove into the mix and the trio began honing their sound and planning their debut album. The group sequestered themselves in the studio with Andy LeMaster (Azure Ray, Bright Eyes) and David Barbe (Uncle Tupelo, Sugar, the Drive-By Truckers) assisting behind the board and cut their debut, finishing it in 2002.

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert / Gifts From Enola - Harmonic Motion: Volume 1 (2008)

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert
You.May.Die.In.The.Desert

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert is a three-piece instrumental band from Seattle, WA. The band originally formed as a two-piece in early 2005 by Brandon Salter and Brian Woods. Their first recordings were nothing more than bass, guitar, some effects, a drum machine, and a tape 4-track recorder. These demos attracted both local and out of state attention. After only playing a handful of local shows they were invited on tour by Boulder, Colorado’s Strangers Die Every Day. After returning from tour, Brandon and Brian decided they needed a live drummer to complete their sound. Local drummer Michael Clark filled the position in the fall of 2006.

Gifts From Enola
Gifts From Enola

Gifts From Enola is a band from Virginia that juxtapose elements of post-rock with a large hard-rock mindset and then allow an experimental bent to soften the edges. Structurally, some songs explode out of the gates with blistering intensity and then recede slowly back into the sonic landscape with a timid disposition. Other times the band waits for the dynamic breakdown and sets the scene up with calm waves of ambience and scant field recordings.

Harmonic Motion Volume 1 is an album of many surprises, all of them good.
Both bands have grown by leaps and bounds since 2006, so much so that   their current work is at times unrecognizable when compared to their former work.
The two bands remain distinctive, and yet still make sense together. Most
importantly, this album is stuffed with highlights and sounds great straight
through. While many veteran acts have disappointed in recent months with
lackluster efforts, it is extremely encouraging to see two young acts
delivering on their initial promise. Congratulations to both groups on a
phenomenal release.
