The Silent Ballet: Volume 13

The Silent Ballet: Volume 13
The Silent Ballet and Lost Children
Summer 2009

Volume 13 marks the beginning of the fourth year of The Silent Ballet’s compilation series. Three years ago the first volume was sent out to the world via the Internet, and today we’re still dedicated to bringing our readers exciting, innovative compilations filled with the best and brightest artists from around the globe.

We’ve come a long way since Poetry Without Words, but hopefully the series has shown that the website is unrestrained by genre and is willing to travel to any corner of the world to unearth up-and-coming musicians. Volume 13 feels particularly international, featuring artists from four continents and nine countries, yet also demonstrates that there is something that connects all of us nonetheless.

We’re committed to our goal of providing quality music in a respectable format without charge. As one of life’s greatest pleasures, music should be freely available to all and resistent to commodification. A big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below; any support is greatly appreciated.

Dresda - Pequod [2008]

Dresda is an instrumental band from Genova, Italy, born in ‘05. Our name comes from the novel “slaughterhouse-five” by Kurt Vonnegut.

We released on 20 Dec 2008 our first record Pequod, under “Marsiglia Records”, that follows the Ep “We are the superfunkers!” published in Feb 2007.

We are influenced by the post rock movement, and most of all we are involved in soundtrack music, as we try to represent and to emphasize with our songs some never-shooted cinematic sequences.

We like to define our music as “frontier music” or as “an accompaniment of your favourite character fading out in the fog”.

In the last three years Dresda made lots of gigs in Italy and some songs have been published in some compilations and radio programs. After Pequod was released in December 08, the band recieved many good reviews from the dedicated press.

We are already working on a new EP, that will be released probably at the end of 2009.

Caspian - Tertia (2009) 320kbps

“Caspian’s third attempt at sonic hegemony is Tertia - ten tracks that swirl, that twist and curl out of and into themselves, embracing the paradox of evoking the wildly specific by exploring the elusively abstract. There is a narrative, but it is spasmodic, fleeting moments, amidst songs like “La Cerva” and “Malacoda” where the instruments come together to an inextricable point, yet they seem to be uniting to deliver this: Things are about to fall apart. And then they do.

With teeth gritted tighter than previous work, “The Raven” showcases the leaden fury that weighs on the cracking atlas-spine of the album. There is something controlled about the plummet, though. It is as if the fall is really a volatile casting down of the familiar until, in “Vienna,” its pieces can be quietly examined amidst the passing violence. Out of the scattered shards comes the closing “Sycamore.” Beginning with the most delicate drippings of melody since their debut’s “Last Rites,” guitar lines weave around each other, bleeding and fading into a mosaic of polyrhythms that, for all their tribal wiliness, ceases with a single snap, soldering the instruments into something fused, smooth, new.

Tertia is, at it’s blood pumping core, an aural descent through darkness towards a sun-soaked radiance. There is a sweeping sense of storytelling happening here, and fans of the band will have no difficulty assigning their own highly personal meaning to the narrative that unfolds. And yet, Tertia is also simply sixty minutes of new music written by five guys, inspired by the relentless cycle of performing on the road and experiencing a world much larger than the small oceanside town they call home. An honest reaction to life experience is being attempted, and it’s taking form in a gloaming full of guitar flurries, bass throbs and pulsating, steady percussion.

Since forming in 2004 as a four-piece with no aspirations other than to create music they could collectively appreciate, the band have added a third guitarist, whose weighty presence makes its recording debut here. After playing their first show in their hometown of Beverly, Mass. five years ago, the band have been in a seemingly constant state of motion, bringing their sound well beyond borders they initially imagined, with a plan to add even more this fall.

The rain of fists that was their debut EP, You Are The Conductor, bled into the distinctive-but-circular tone poems of their first full-length, The Four Trees. Now, Tertia. One word meaning ‘three’ - the sum is merely an echo of its parts, the parts always aching–or, at least trying–to be one.”

65daysofstatic - Escape From New York (2009) by DV8

In the last few years 65daysofstatic have played over
10million shows around the world. Their blend of glitchy dance
music and deafening, soaring guitars has left thousands of
converts in their wake. Three albums in, and 65daysofstatic
are currently locked away in Sheffield battling with the
writing for their fourth album. Last year, most of their time
was taken up supporting The Cure on their world tour. Rolling
up to arenas and blasting their confusing noise at shows full
of unsuspecting Cure fans, was an immensely satisfying
experience. For a long time they suspected that just because
they don’t have any singing and sometimes play in weird time
signatures, their music shouldn’t be consigned exclusively to
bedrooms and club shows to the passionate few. It bounces
around in stadiums nicely too. The World Tour came to an end
with two shows in New York City, at 2 of the most prestigious
venues the US has to offer - Madison Square Garden and Radio
City Music Hall. Both shows were recorded and the result is
the bands first live album. A 45 minute rush of tinnitus,
contrary techno, fragile guitars, anti-social drum’n'bass in
7/4 and, if you listen carefully, the sound of 20,000 people
finding rooms in their heads they never knew were there.

Tracklist:
1. Drove Through Ghosts To Get Here 4:25
2. No Use Crying Over (Some Techno) 2:12

Mono - Hymn To The Immortal Wind - (Advance)-2009-FNT

Album: Hymn To The Immortal Wind
Label: Human Highway Records
Playtime: 66:57 min
Genre: Rock
URL:
Rip date: 2009-02-05
Street date: 2009-00-00
Size: 99.63 MB
Type: Advance
Quality: 195 kbps / 4410kHz / Joint Stereo

Just in time for their 10-year anniversary, MONO return with their fifth
studio album, the absolutely massive Hymn To The Immortal Wind.

After touring almost non-stop for five years, the band hibernated for over a
year to focus solely on writing Hymn. The result is their most thoughtful and
eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic
narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love
story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise
crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever
enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ,
piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up.

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini,
there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little
terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their
seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along flutes,
and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet
opening moments

While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of MONO’s
music, the dynamic shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of
quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance these elements so masterfully has
become MONO’s strongest virtue.
